FISHING CLINIC AT JOHN MARTIN RES, STATE PARK SAT., JUNE 4

The Colorado Division of Wildlife will host a Warm Water Fishing Clinic at John Martin Reservoir State Park June 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

DOW staff will present information about warm water fish species and tips on how to catch them! The program will be geared toward adults, but fishermen of any age are welcome!

Future Fisherman Foundation and Bass Federation Join Forces

McLean, Va. — In light of difficulties raising much-needed funding to support its programs, the Future Fisherman Foundation (F3) has sought and found a new home with The Bass Federation (TBF), Inc. of Ponca City, Oklahoma. Since 1968, the Federation has been recognized as the oldest and largest organized broad-based, independent, grassroots organization in bass fishing. After weeks of discussion, F3′s board of directors and the leadership of TBF approved the merger, which will ensure important F3 programs such as Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) continue to be available for educators and youth throughout the U.S. The transfer of all F3′s assets to TBF will take place immediately.

NOAA Says Bluefin Not Endangered

Prior to the Memorial Day Weekend, NOAA announced that Atlantic bluefin tuna do not warrant species protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The agency did say however they are committed to revisiting their decision by early 2013, when more information is available on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill, as well as a new stock assessment from the scientific arm of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). NOAA is formally designating both the western Atlantic and eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean stocks of bluefin tuna as “species of concern” under ESA, which officially places the species on a watch list for concerns about its status and threats to the species.

Free Kids Fishing Events Under Way this Weekend

RALEIGH, N.C. – More than 35 free, family oriented fishing events get under way this weekend, as part of 2011 National Fishing and Boating Week.

Supported by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, in cooperation with Neuse Sport Shop, North Carolina State Council of Trout Unlimited, Bass Pro Shops and the U.S. Forest Service, these fishing events provide opportunities for young anglers to learn fishing basics, such as casting, knot-tying and tackle selection. They also let young anglers try their luck at reeling in a variety of freshwater fish, many of them stocked by the Commission, including trout in the mountains and channel catfish in the Piedmont and Coastal regions.
